Resurrection Headline: Peace Be with You! . Don’t bury the lead. Journalists know how necessary it is to write the most important thing first! The risen Jesus didn’t bury the lead when reuniting with his crestfallen disciples, three times, he led with, “Peace be with you.” Of course, standing among them while all the doors were locked warranted a certain unsettledness, but the peace Jesus offered soothed deeper alienations, anxieties, and guilt. . The last time the disciples had been with Jesus they fought over who was the greatest, slept when asked to watch and pray, cut the ear off a man, cowered, ran, denied, and only one stayed near to watch their Lord suffer on their behalf. . Yet, here was Jesus offering peace! He could declare peace because he had won it for them, for us. His death and now his resurrection displayed the power of God to destroy the depths of sin, death, and our post-Eden enmity with God! . Quickly on the heels of “Peace be with you,” Jesus tells his disciples, “As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you!” Far from disqualified, they receive the Spirit. . Sent ones, qualified by Christ’s finished work, hear his resurrection headline to you, “Peace be with you. Peace be with you. How can this day of death and darkness be called good? . Because whatever darkness I am enduring, I have a suffering savior who understands. He has walked the path of pain. . Because Jesus' death on this day bought me at ransom. He has secured my place as God's child. . Because the Father turned his face away and allowed Jesus to die for my sin, I always have the Father’s smiling face shining upon me. . What must I do to earn his love? . Nothing. It is finished. . And my soul will live forever, loved by the one true God. . It helps us pause and pay attention to the wide variety of emotions even among those having the same real-time experience. It’s often true that we simultaneously hold in tension positive and negative feelings. . Overwhelmed and Hopeful. Lonely and Faithful. Tired and Excited. Hurt and Optimistic. Selfish and Thankful. Living in the Already and Not Yet, . It’s normal for mixed feelings to co-exist. . As you journey through Holy Week, what are your feeling words? Select one or two. We bet they are mixed because this week is one of the busiest times of the year if you are in ministry. Not only are you attempting to focus on Jesus, your mind is on the nuts and bolts of preparations for services (Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, & Easter Sunday), or perhaps a community outreach egg hunt, or an Easter luncheon. Mixed feelings. You are not alone. If Jesus took the wheel, the feeling wheel, with him on Maundy Thursday…what may have been his emotions when . - table-side with his disciples... - wrestling in the garden... - walking with the soldiers toward the high priest’s house... . Yet…for the joy set before him! (Heb 12:2) . You, weary friend, are that joy set before him. He endured the cross and despised it’s shame for you! Know you have his love and his smile as you wearily and joyfully (my two words) journey this week. . . . . . #parakeleo #churchplanting #churchplantingwives #churchplanting #churchplantinglife #pastorswives #churchplantingwomen At our church on Palm Sunday, the service begins with our children parading down the middle aisle, waving palm branches as we sing “Hosanna”. Most of the branches they hold come from my yard. . In the early morning light, I walk barefoot through the grass with my clippers in hand, gathering branches and gathering my thoughts. I wonder....would I have been one of the crowd waving a branch as Jesus rode into town? Would I have been a follower? Would I have worshipped him? I know my own propensity to doubt and fear. Would I have been faithful? I don’t know. . Many who held those branches in adoration would soon cast them aside in betrayal. The shouts of “ Hosanna” would change to “Crucify him!” My thoughts turn to the people I worship alongside each week... and i think of some who once stood among us, but have left. Do they love you? Did they love us? I too have tasted the sting of betrayal. . Jesus, you know, I whisper. You know. And this is why you came, to heal our messy, aching, betraying hearts. You rode in humbly on a donkey, to give yourself to the people who would crucify you. Humble Jesus.
